5. Research type

We have divided research types into the following categories: research report, journal article, conference paper, conference report, evaluation report, book, chapter in book, PhD thesis, DPhil thesis and MA dissertation. These categories cover research that has been carried out by the voluntary and statutory sectors, policy-makers, academics and students.

Masters dissertations have not been included unless they have been published, presented at conferences or featured on noted websites. PhD theses and DPhil theses have been included; all summaries of PhD theses and DPhil theses have been written by the authors themselves due to their length. Briefings, best/good practice guides and policy papers have not been summarised.

If two or more articles or reports are based on the same research, then all have been included. For example, if a researcher has written a journal article and also a PhD thesis based on the same research then both have been included. The differences between the articles or reports have been emphasised in the summaries. A cross-reference has also been included in the summary.
